Tooth Fairy

I think my mom is the tooth fairy.

She carries around a few quarters gripped in her hand at all times and when I make her bed I always find change in the sheets. Like a little silver miracle.

I'm starting to think she might have a nighttime fairy job and just doesn't let me know. It would spoil the mystery. We can't ever know. Of course the tooth fairy would be an old forgetful mom, not needed for busy daytime things anymore, but still well-versed in the deep hopes of a tiny tooth under a pillow at bedtime, put there by someone small in dinosaur pajamas.

Also she loves kids. She waves at them at Target when we took her in the handicapped grocery cart. You can fit a real live grown person in those! Helpful for oldsters with bad knees. So she could go with us and grin and wave at babies, who are also being pushed in carts with their moms.

It's not so bad being old and a little lost. There's treasure, and babies. And someone guiding you through.

Especially if you are secretly flying out the window at night, and on return accidentally spilling some of your magic treasure when you slip back in bed.

Just a few shiny quarters.
