The Celebration of a Whole Face

I sold a bunny the other day and it was the first time we both got out of our cars and we had nothing on our faces. A showdown of stranger nudity. Faces in the raw.

It was just like High Noon except instead of gunslingers, it was no masks. We stood apart from each other in the street. He had a royal blue mask hanging around his neck, ready. My mask was in the car, arm's length. We paused.

I've never not had a mask I said

And he laughed and said it's weird now

And we both still stood hesitant and I said I've been vaccinated and he said me too

And then we walked to each other and I'm handing him his bunny and we're doing the food and talk and everyone smiles when they get a bunny and I'm thinking this guy is 28 maybe and look at his WHOLE FACE all up close, just all the parts freely used and so beautiful

like it's nothing

like he carries it around like that, all bright and facing the world

I help put his bunnies in the baby booster seat in the back and I know they will have kids playing with them, bunnies are better than cats, fluffy sadness buffers in a weird time

I walk back to my car

and I feel the times changing, the world coming back to me wrapped in the whole face of a kind stranger
